    4. Some main research and development projects

    Nytjaland. 1999-present
This project builds on experience gained in the Jarðvegsvernd project. Nytjaland-Jarðabók Íslands (Icelandic National Geographic Farm Database) aims to make a complete database for all farms of Iceland (about 5000). It is a joint project of Rala, L.r. (SCS), Bændasamtök Íslands (Farmers Society of Iceland) and the Ministry of Agriculture. The database will include geographical information on land types and will be one of the foundations of an effort to make all of Iceland’s agricultural production sustainable. Many types of attribute data will be attached to the database, and it is planned as a Public Domain database with internet access.www.nytjaland.is

Ýmir, Characterization of Icelandic soils. 1999-present.
The aim of the project is to characterize Icelandic soils and to classify them. New Icelandic soil classification system is being developed and tested. Prototype of the system is already being used. Data has been submitted to the EU-Soil Bureau in order to complete the European 1:1 000 000 soil map. Participation in sub-polar region soil mapping/characterization in co-operation with the US-NRCS, Agriculture Canada, and the European Soil Bureau. www.rala.is/ymir

Jarðvegsvernd (The National Soil Erosion Assessment Program). 1991- 1997.
A national assessment of soil erosion in Iceland. Mapping was completed in 1996 and the results introduced in the book Soil Erosion in Iceland in 1997 (available in English, see www.rala.is/desert . The book was translated into Danish, English and German. The results are stored in a database for soil erosion in Iceland, consisting of about 18 000 polygons with detailed erosion information. This information serves as a source for further soil erosion research, including further research on eolian processes on Icelandic sandy deserts.

An emphasis was made to introduce the erosion problem to the public and also to land users, with over 30 meetings held throughout the country. This project and its leader received the Nordic Nature and Environmental Award in 1998.

Eolian processes on Icelandic sandy deserts (Sandur-Sandfok). 1997-present.
The aim of the project is to determine the key characteristics of eolian processes of the Icelandic sandy deserts, and environmental factors that control the sand-drift, and to study eolian processes in an international context.
